Sensory Mystery Box Activity for Child Development

Dear Guriya,
Guess how would you have felt after receiving a beautifully packed box wrapped in a bow style with graceful silk ribbon 🎀
Imagined well! The curiosity about what’s inside the mystery box would always keep you motivated to explore new things. It helped you in sensory development a lot.

For a child, senses are the gateway to the world. Child learns through sensory exposure which becomes part of his experiences. The richer the exposure, the broader the experiences.

Tactile (Touch):

The mystery box had different textured clothes to touch and feel like velvet, silk, jeans, cotton, wool etc. We would touch on your palm, feet and cheeks as these are the most sensitive areas.

Auditory (Hear):

This was your favourite one! You would often find a bell in it that we ring near your right ear, left ear, in your front and at your back. The bell sound would instantly make you happy 😊. You would also find your rattles or simple kitchen utensils for following the sound.

Taste:

This one was tricky to introduce but thanks to teether that I could use before 6 months to introduce the concept of taste. I would sterlise the teether and add some breast milk on it. I love watching your confused face😄

Smell:

The mystery box was truely a mystery in this part because I would make you smell anything and everything that I would find in home. You would smell culinary items (spices, coffee beans, fennel seeds etc), medicinal items(baby balm, panadol syrup etc), cosmetic items (room spray, mam’s perfume, baby oil etc), fruits and so on.

Visual (See):

I understand your love for black and white, high contrast pictures. I would give high contrast bananapanda cards in your hand and you would love to observe them. You even acheived your It was your milestone that you followed the cards while mama moved them right to left and top to bottom.

Feelings:

I belive this is the sixth sense that everyone feels but very few can understand and express. Our mystery box will be a good tool to introduce different feelings with the help of emojis. This will also be a good probe to start discussions about safe ways of expressing and controlling your feelings.

Every Time you got a sensory exposure, mama ensured to give you language by describing it. For eg, a silk cloth is slippery, a bell sound is loud, breast milk is sweet, perfume has flowery fragrance, the cards have zig zag patterns etc.

With all the love with which mystery box is prepared, it actually prepares you for the life❤️
